First week in Freiburg!

Classes Have FINALLY Begun!!

Hallo und Guten Tag alle!

So after a strenuous two months of relaxing and hanging out, I have finally officially begun my classes here at the Jazz & Rock Schule Freiburg. I have a total of six classes, some of which meet twice a week, but it still makes for a pretty free schedule, which is nice. Since the classes we’re taking are only for Berklee students, our class sizes range from 1 – 4, which is pretty different from what I’m used to at Berklee (except labs I suppose…). Today I had Harmony 4, which I only take with one other partner in crime, which means that I can’t fall asleep in class… gotta keep alert! But it’s actually pretty good. My teacher, Tom Timmler, seems to be a very knowledgeable person and he also seems to be a good teacher too, so I’m actually looking forward to the class. And since the class size is so small, we basically get private instruction, so we should be experts at Harmony before June comes along.

After that the four of us Freiburgers went to another campus to start our German language study. It’s interesting because two of us (myself included) have a background in German, while the other two are beginners. It’s good to be able to help the others, but the two of us who have a bit more experience have talked about maybe getting into a higher-level class, so hopefully that happens. But it was still a fun class.

Today I practiced for the first time in a few weeks, and thanks to God’s goodness, my knee is doing just fine!! Praise the Lord!! It felt so good to get started on some work. I’m going to try to get into it slowly though, just to be safe. Right now my left arm is kindof feeling the workout a bit, so I’ll have to make sure I keep up my exercising and what-not so I can SHRED LIKE A BEAST!! That’s the current goal.

I met some of the German students today, which was cool! They’re just like the students at Berklee and MacEwan! It’s so cool how music is such an international language. Pretty much everywhere you go, you meet people who you can relate to through music, which is a pretty cool thing. I’m going to be jamming some metal tunes with some of the German students on Friday, so that’ll be really fun. I’m pretty excited about that.

And of course, the food continues to impress. I’m afraid I’m going to gain a lot of weight because I’ll just want to eat so much! Oh well, I guess I should load up on good European food now while I can!

Well that’s it for now. Bis bald!

Well now I'm here! CRAZY!!

Hallo und Guten Tag von Deutschland!!

Hi everyone! SOOO I decided to make this blog so I could keep you all updated on what I'm up to here in Europe!! So far, it's been a pretty awesome. I feel like I have to keep pinching myself to see if I'll wake up! It seems so surreal.
My flight over here was long, but good. On the plane the guy sitting next to me was younger and super nice so we just talked and watched movies the whole flight, which made the flight a lot more interesting. They served delicious food, and free alcholic beverages! I had a glass of wine, Baileys on the rocks (which they especially came around and served...!!!) and another mixed drink. It was a pretty different experience. Drinking is so much more normal here, you see wine being sold in the general supermarket! And both times I had wine, it was DELICIOUS!!
So anyways, I flew in to Basel, Switzerland at about 10:30am, and was picked up by a driving service which drove me to Freiburg. I got to practice some of my German with the driver, so that was fun. But when we got to the dorms, he dropped me off and then just left, and I was all alone. I guess the director of the program was a little late coming to meet me, so I was standing around with my luggage and thinking to myself, WHAT AM I GOING TO DO I AM BY MYSELF AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHERE I AM. It was kindof funny actually. But the director found me pretty soon and then all was good. I was then given the keys to my room and had some time to crash and freshen up before going shopping and dinner.
At dinner we went to this AMAZING restaurant, and I had the best pasta and scallops ever. We were probably there for about 4 hours. That's another thing I've noticed about the culture here: first off, dinner starts alot later than in the states or Canada, and second, they really take their time. You could easily spend 3 hours at a meal. It's pretty cool. Two of the students from the school came along with us too, and it was really fun getting to know them. One of the guys is a bassist who loves prog metal, and we've already made plans to jam so that'll be SCHWEET!!!
Today we had an orientation and tour of the school, and it looks like it'll be pretty awesome. The practice rooms are super nice and big, so that'll be good. I have a pretty chill schedule, and I've even got Fridays off, so it'll be super good for travelling, which I am very excited about. Tonight we'll be going to a more traditional German restaurant for supper, and then I think we'll go out to a local club to check out the nightlife scene here, so that should be fun. Pretty excited.
Well that's all for now folks. I'll post pictures when I have more to post :) I miss you and love you all!

Bis bald!
